Samsung and Teva named top accused patent infringers in US

Samsung and T eva have been named the top accused patent infringers in the US for 2016.

Software system company Docket Navigator released a report on Thursday, February 9 called “Top accused infringers, patentees, and law firms in 2016”.

Samsung was named the top accused patent infringer by number of new cases filed against it.

The South Korean company faced 36 new patent cases; Huawei and LG Electronics were second and third, with 26 cases respectively.

Pharmaceutical company Teva topped the rankings for patents allegedly infringed, with 185.

Drugs companies Mylan (176) and Actavis (166) placed second and third in the report.

A patent accusation, according to Docket Navigator, is a more “granular” way to measure patent litigation activity than counting the number of cases or litigants.

In this instance, the term means a request for relief at a district court, the US International Trade Commission or the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Docket Navigator’s report also looked at law firms representing accused infringers, placing Gillam & Smith (176), Fish & Richardson (163) and Potter Minton (95) in the top three.

According to the report, the top firms representing patentees were Puerto-Rico based Ferraiuoli (206), and law firms Capshaw DeRieux (185) and Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnel (130).

The report can be viewed in full here.

A spokesperson for Teva told WIPR it had no comment on the report or its veracity.
