Qualcomm and Rambus shake hands on licensing deal
Semiconductor company Qualcomm has signed a deal allowing it to license memory, interface and security technologies from Rambus.
Qualcomm will have access to high-performance, low-power memory technology, as well as security technology developed by the cryptography research division of Rambus, a licensing company.
The remaining terms of the agreement are confidential.
“This agreement highlights our ongoing commitment to providing access to valuable memory and security technologies to industry leaders,” said Ron Black, president of Rambus.
“Engaging with Qualcomm with this agreement gives us an opportunity to collaborate with the broader industry to bring compelling solutions to the segment," he added.
On the same day as the deal was announced, June 11, Rambus predicted its second quarter revenue to be between $75 million and $77 million, up from the initial target of $69 million to $74 million. For the entire 2014, the company said it expects revenue to range from $295 million to $305 million.
Earlier this year, Qualcomm, which supplies chips that power smartphones and wireless devices, acquired 1,400 US patents and around 1,000 pending applications in other countries from Hewlett-Packard.
