Qualcomm and LG shake hands in patent dispute

Qualcomm has resolved its patent licensing dispute with LG following an agreement reached during arbitration.

US-based Qualcomm said it had resolved through “good-faith negotiations” an arbitration dispute that centred on terms in a licensing agreement LG had signed to use Qualcomm’s portfolio of patents.

The patents centre on 3G WCDMA and CDMA2000 and 4G LTE wireless technologies, Qualcomm said, as well as numerous other technologies implemented in wireless devices.

“Under this resolution, LG will continue to benefit from access to Qualcomm’s broad portfolio of patented technologies that enable LG to deliver innovative devices to its customers globally,” Qualcomm said.

Neither company revealed financial terms of the settlement.

Skott Ahn, president of LG, said: “We are pleased to have resolved our dispute with Qualcomm through good-faith negotiation and mutual respect. LG and Qualcomm have worked closely together for many years and we greatly value our partnership.”

Derek Aberle, president of Qualcomm, said the company invests “billions of dollars every year” in research and development that has driven fundamental breakthroughs in wireless systems technology.

He added: “We are pleased that this resolution will position both companies to continue to deliver value to our customers and consumers globally.”
