Piggly Wiggly sued for patent infringement

US-based supermarket Piggly Wiggly has been sued by a business for patent infringement.

Piggly Wiggly was sued by Hawk Technology Systems at the US District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi, Greenville Division on Thursday, February 2.

Hawk Technology claimed that the supermarket had infringed claims of US patent numbers 5,625,410 and RE43, 462, both called “Video monitoring and conferencing system”.

The ‘462 patent is a re-issue of the ‘410 patent. They were invented by Hawk Technology CEO Barry Schwab and Ken Washino.

Hawk Technology is the owner of both patents, which were registered at the US Patent and Trademark Office in 1997 and 1999.

The suit claimed that Piggly Wiggly directly infringed claim 12 of the ‘462 patent. The claim covers a method of simultaneously displaying and storing multiple video images.

Hawk Technology asked for damages, attorneys’ fees and a jury trial.
