Nokia and Wi-LAN strike patent deal

Wireless technology company Wi-LAN has signed a licensing deal with mobile phone maker Nokia and will also acquire a portfolio of patents, it was announced today.

The patents in the deal are related to a range of wireless technologies including 4G, and will give Nokia a “multi-year licence”, Wi-LAN said.

Under a separate acquisition agreement Canada-based Wi-LAN will also gain a portfolio of patents from the Finnish phone maker.

Wi-LAN said the patents are related to “various current and future wireless handset and infrastructure technologies” and will provide it with worldwide coverage.

The terms and conditions of both agreements have been kept under wraps.

“We are very pleased to have negotiated this license with Nokia Networks,” said Jim Skippen, president and chief executive at Wi-LAN.

“The acquired patents will add significant value to our wireless portfolio and we believe will aid in the signing of future licenses,” he added.

Nokia and Wi-LAN first signed a patent license agreement in 2006 related to Wi-LAN’s then current portfolio.
