McDonald’s sued for patent infringement over internet software

McDonald’s has been sued for patent infringement over its use of location-specific internet technology software.

The case was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division on Tuesday, May 23.

Internet Media Interactive Corporation claims its patent (US number 6,049,835), “for providing automatic access to preselected locations on the internet”, was directly infringed by McDonald’s.

The company added that McDonald’s published a “compilation of information with respect to preselected internet locations, eg, advertisements on Twitter or other online medium, which has directly infringed the patent”.

The patent in question relates to location-specific URLs allowing third party social media companies to target location-based adverts at users.

“Defendant had the right and ability to stop or limit the infringement, did not do so, and has profited from such infringement,” the company concluded.

Internet Media Interactive Corporation is seeking a judgment in favour of it and monetary damages against McDonald’s that are “adequate to compensate for the infringement that has occurred”.
