LG and Motorola stung by patent claims
A company called Uniloc has targeted a number of technology brands, including LG Electronics and Motorola, in patent infringement lawsuits.
Uniloc claimed that it owns a number of patents in the text/voice instant messaging field.
In six filings yesterday, September 6, at the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, HTC America, Kyocera America, LG Electronics, Motorola Mobility, ZTE and Huawei were accused of patent infringement.
Uniloc claimed that its US patent numbers 8,724,622; 8,995,433; 7,535,890; and 8,199,747, all of which concern a system and method for instant speech messaging, have been infringed.
This isn’t the first time Uniloc has filed patent infringement suits against a number of companies, with numerous news sites calling the business a ‘patent troll’.
Back in 2003, Uniloc filed a patent infringement suit against Microsoft, claiming it infringed US patent number 5,490,216, which concerned product activation in software.
The suit resulted in a long-running battle, according to Bloomberg, and Microsoft reached a settlement with the company in 2012.
Uniloc also sued the creators of video game “Minecraft”, Sony and Sega of America, for patent infringement.
In March 2016, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board invalidated a Uniloc patent, number 5,490,216, following a filing by Sega of America and Ubisoft, among others.
