IoT device link to IP theft will rise, says report

A report released by McAfee Labs, a research division of Intel Security, has predicted more instances of internet of things (IoT) devices being used as gateways to data and intellectual property theft.

McAfee Labs released its report, called “McAfee Labs 2017 Threats Predictions”, today, November 30.

It focused on IoT developments in the next two to four years and asked what threats and breaches will be seen, including how geopolitical issues, legislation and regulatory actions will affect this environment.

McAfee Labs predicted ten possible outcomes related to threats that IoT devices face from cybercriminals or nation states in the set time period.

According to the report: "During the next two to four years, we will see more instances of IoT devices used as gateways to data and intellectual property theft, critical infrastructure disruption, and other major attacks."

Vincent Weafer, vice president of McAfee Labs, said: “To change the rules of the game between attackers and defenders, we need to neutralise our adversaries’ greatest advantage.

“As a new defensive technique is developed, its effectiveness increases until attackers are compelled to develop countermeasures to evade it. To overcome the designs of our adversaries, we need to go beyond understanding the threat landscape to changing the defender-attacker dynamics in these six areas,” he added.
