Google and Intertrust launch PatentShield to fight patent litigation
Google and Intertrust, a provider of computing products, have launched a new programme to assist start-ups in defending against patent litigation threats.
The new programme, PatentShield, aims to prevent larger companies from using patent litigation to create an “uneven playing field” for start-ups .
Members of the programme can take ownership of patents from a portfolio curated by Intertrust for defensive purposes if they are sued for infringement.
“We designed PatentShield to protect innovators,” said Talal Shamoon, Intertrust’s CEO.
“We have direct experience with our venture portfolio companies being threatened in the past and conceived of this programme in response. With PatentShield, start-ups can have additional peace of mind to grow while minimising the threat from an undefended flank.”
Patents have been collected from those owned by both Google and Intertrust, some of which were acquired from major research labs at Fortune 500 companies.
