Google and Amazon targeted in patent suits

Texas-based Uniloc has taken on  Google and  Amazon in two patent infringement claims filed in the US.

Uniloc, which has a subsidiary in Texas, filed its  lawsuit against Google on Sunday, March 26 at the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division.

The company’s  suit against Amazon was filed in the same court on Friday, March 24.

Uniloc, which claimed that it owns a number of patents in the text/voice instant messaging field, alleged both companies had infringed three patents.

Google is alleged to have infringed US patent numbers 8,724,622; 8,995,433; and 7,535,890.

Patent ‘622, which is called “System and method for instant VoIP messaging”, has been infringed by Google’s voice and mobile messaging Allo, according to the suit.

Amazon is alleged to have infringed US patent numbers 8,571,194; 7,804,948; and 7,853,000.

The three patents are all called “System and method for initiating a conference call”, and Amazon is claimed to have infringed them through its voice and messaging app Amazon Chime.

Uniloc is seeking a jury trial, damages, costs and expenses, and further relief that the court deems just and proper.

In September last year, WIPR  reported that Uniloc had targeted a number of technology brands, including LG Electronics and Motorola, in patent suits.

That wasn’t the first time Uniloc had filed patent claims against several companies, with numerous  news sites calling the business a ‘patent troll’.
