Forbes targeted in Harvard photo copyright claim
US business magazine Forbesillegally used a photo of a Harvard University lecturer, according to a copyright claim filed yesterday.
Photojournalist Jodi Hilton filed her claim at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleging that Forbes used her photo of Hannah Riley Bowles, a senior lecturer at the university, without permission.
Hilton has a pending US copyright registration, number 1-454187761, for the photo.
Forbes is alleged to have used the photo in an article called “3 Strategies to Earn What You Deserve in the Gig Economy”.
“Forbes did not license the photograph from plaintiff for its article, nor did Forbes have plaintiff’s permission or consent to publish the photograph on its website,” said the claim.
Hilton added that the magazine’s infringement was wilful, intentional and purposeful, and in “disregard of and indifference” to her rights.
She is seeking a jury trial, damages, profits and further relief as the court may deem just and proper.
