European Patent Office outlines policy brief on climate change

The European Patent Office (EPO) has published a policy brief on the latest trends in climate change mitigation technologies (CCMTs).

Published on Monday, July 3, the policy brief aims to “encourage an informed debate on climate change mitigation technologies, with findings based on the most recent data sources”.

The brief highlighted that the number and commercial value of CCMT patents is growing globally, with the figure doubling in the past 20 years to over 75,000.

The statistics also showed that the number of “high value” CCMT patents had trebled to 16,000 since 1995.

To meet this definition, patent protection must have been sought in at least two jurisdictions.

The findings were published in co-operation with the International Renewable Energy Agency, which signed a memorandum of understanding with the EPO in April to “work together to develop further evidence-based research on the innovation and dissemination of renewable energy technologies”.

Benoît Battistelli, the EPO president, said: “Supported by patents, innovation in the renewable energy technologies sector has contributed to dramatic cost reductions and rapid technology deployment.”

He added: “With this policy brief the EPO promotes the use of patent information to enhance structural transparency regarding climate change mitigation technologies.”
