Covington to open Seoul office

Covington & Burling LLP has applied to open a new office in Seoul, Korea, and has hired William H.Y. Park, a veteran corporate lawyer based in Korea, to help oversee the expansion.

Park will work closely with former Ambassador to the United Nations Daniel Spiegel, senior counsel at Covington, who will be the foreign legal consultant of the new office.

“William has deep experience helping Korean and other Asian clients do business in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East,” said Timothy Hester, chair of the firm’s management committee. “We expect William and Dan to be at the core of our team in Korea, advising global clients on a broad range of cross-border issues.”

For the past 12 years, Park has worked in Korea, handling general corporate matters and serving as the team leader on antitrust investigations in the US and the EU, and on IP and general litigation involving the US.

“Covington is already well known for helping Korean firms do business in the US, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. I expect that we will substantially expand the Korean client base over the next few years,” Park said.

Park is a native of Korea. He graduated with distinction from Stanford Law School in 1988 after earning his Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from MIT in 1985. Park will be based in Seoul, along with Ambassador Spiegel, when the office is approved later this year. Covington, which has an office in Beijing, also announced in February plans to open another China-based office, in Shanghai.
