Brazil appoints new INPI president

The Brazilian government has revealed that it has appointed a new president of its intellectual property office.

Luiz Otávio Pimentel has taken over the reins at the Brazilian Patent and Trademark office (INPI).

The news was announced by Dilma Rousseff, president of Brazil, on the INPI website on Tuesday, July 28.

According to law news website The National Law Review, Otávio Brandelli, INPI’s former president, was dismissed in April this year.

Before this week’s announcement, Ademir Tardelli, who is vice-president at INPI, had been acting as the interim head.

Pimentel has experience in intellectual property law and innovation. He is also an associate professor at Federal University of Santa Catarina, where he teaches IP law.
