BlackBerry sues US tech company for patent infringement
BlackBerry has sued US technology company Avaya in a patent infringement lawsuit that accuses the company of infringing eight of its patents.
In a complaint filed at the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas, BlackBerry is seeking damages and a “reasonable royalty” as a result of the alleged infringement.
The suit asserts eight patents: US numbers 9,143,801; 8,964,849; 8,116,739; 8,886,212; 8,688,439; 7,440,561; 8,554,218; and 7,372,961,
They are directed to technologies including methods for displaying messages, tracking devices for mobiles and call-routing methods.
BlackBerry is seeking “an order and judgment preliminarily and permanently enjoining Avaya from further acts of infringement of the BlackBerry asserted patents”.
The company added that in developing “its ground-breaking mobile communications devices”, BlackBerry has invented a broad array of technologies that cover everything from enhanced security and cryptographic techniques to mobile device user interfaces, communication servers, and many other areas.
“BlackBerry has protected the technical innovations resulting from these investments, including through seeking patent protection, and … BlackBerry owns rights to an array of patented technologies in the US,” the company added.
Last month, WIPR reported that BlackBerry had won a patent infringement dispute in which it was accused of infringing five patents covering smartphone technology.
In a judgment handed down on July 22, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas found in favour of Blackberry, which had been accused of infringement by technology company Mobile Telecommunications.
